- The Senior Optical Engineer will support the design, manufacturing, integration, testing, and operation of advanced imaging payloads.
- Responsibilities include coordinating optical manufacturing activities and executing alignment and performance testing of imaging systems.
- The role involves writing test plans and analyzing measured data for alignment and calibration of imaging systems.
- The engineer will develop and expand test software and electrical ground support equipment for automation of testing processes.
- Collaboration with external partners to transfer advanced imaging expertise into Planet is a key aspect of the job.

- The ideal candidate will have 6-8 years of relevant experience in airborne or space-based imaging payloads, cameras, or telescopes.
- A strong background in assembly, integration, alignment, and testing of optical instruments is essential.
- Proficiency in scientific tools such as Zemax, MATLAB, Python, and/or C/C++ is required to advance design maturity and analyze system performance.
- Candidates should possess excellent interpersonal skills and a hands-on, can-do attitude to collaborate effectively across teams.
- Experience working with external vendors, suppliers, and integrators is crucial for this role.
